While the show tackled such tough subjects as child abuse, it also touched on forgiveness, a theme which has remained central in many of his works and reflects his deep connection to his Christian faith.
The musical's run lasted only one weekend and drew a measly 30 people to see the show. Disappointed yet determined, Perry continued to work odd jobs while reworking the show. He staged the show in several other cities, but success still eluded him. Broke, Perry was living out of his car for a time. InPerry tried one more time to win over theater audiences.
Soon Perry was performing to sellout crowds and the musical was moved to a larger theater. After so many years of hard work, he had finally earned critical acclaim as well as commercial success. For his next project, Perry worked on an adaptation of evangelist T. Jakes' book Woman, Thou Art Loosedwhich proved to be quite popular.
His next effort, however, brought to life his most famous character, Madea. Basing Madea on his mother and several other mature women in his life, Perry played the eccentric character himself wearing drag. She next appeared in Diary of a Mad Black Woman Also, pushed him to stop ignoring critics as haters and acknowledged that black people need new stories and new storytellers.
During an hour interview in OctoberPerry stated that the characters serve as bait that he uses to convey important messages in a charming and comedic way. Further, his work was praised by Oprah Winfrey who told an interviewer, that Perry grew up alongside strong, black women and that the character, Madea serves as a compilation of them. The series followed an African-American household of three generations.
Additionally, the show ran during the spring of as a show pilot. Succeeding its realization of high ratings, House of Payne entered broadcast syndication. Reruns played through December before its second season. InPerry obtained the acre previous military base Fort McPherson located in Atlanta, which he transformed into studios. Also, it hosts 12 sound stages dubbed after highly accomplished African-Americans in the entertainment industry.
On February 19th,Perry personally declared that the blockbuster Marvel film, B lack Pantherserved as the initial film filmed on one of the new stages at Tyler Perry Studio. Tyler Perry Studios serves as one of the largest film studios in the nation and established Perry as the second African-American to outright own a big film studio, after Tim and Daphne Reid.
